September 11 – a call to protect liberty over perceived safety

The Tennessee Firearms Association came into existence just a few years prior to the terrorists attacks of September 11, 2001.  Since then, we have seen massive changes in our government and many of those have needlessly come at the expense of our personal freedoms and liberties.

We have seen material erosions of our freedoms in the name of perceived “safety.”  We have seen our access to firearms reduced in the name of perceived “safety”.  We have seen many, many FFLs put out of business in the name of perceived “safety”.  We have seen local and state governments protect and in some instances extend “gun free zones” in the name of perceived “safety”.  We hear talk of “extreme risk protection orders” (also known as “Red Flag” laws) in the name of perceived “safety”.

We have seen Tennessee’s Legislature repeatedly reject permitless open carry and constitutional carry ostensibly in the name of perceived “safety.”

We have seen Tennessee’s Legislature refuse – in the name of perceive “safety” – to advance numerous bills that would increase the capacity of citizens to carry self-defense arms.

The facts are that this is a country in which certain human and fundamental rights take precedence over perceived safety.  Our constitution clearly contemplates that some liberties and freedoms are beyond most if not all government regulation.  Indeed, some court have created all new “liberties” that heretofore were never recognized or which were in fact themselves criminal acts and have given them protections beyond government meddling.

In another context, our constitution clearly contemplates that some liberties and freedoms are so important that our system will tolerate some criminals, includnig rapists, murders and terrorists, going free rather than allowing them to be convicted on illegally obtained yet factually accurate evidence or, perhaps worse, allowing them to be convicted on less than a standard of “beyond a reasonable doubt.”

On September 11 of each year we must remind ourselves and take an oath to our family, descendants, and friends that we will not forget that inadequate security and political correctness allowed terrorists to do us great and unmeasurable harm.  We must be willing to pledge our spirits, our efforts and our resources to do what we can to avoid a repeat of those events.

Yet we must also be mindful that in the search for perceived safety through government oversight that we do not destroy the fabric of freedoms on which a constitutional republic uniquely exists.  It is critical that we as citizens zealously protect our system of government from being occupied or controlled by individuals whose principles and priorities are not clearly set in the cornerstone of stewardship which rests upon the restraints of a constitutional republic.  We must strive to make sure that those who lack the capacity for constitutional stewardship not be allowed to enter into or remain in public office.

You can help in that effort by joining, renewing and making supplemental member contributions to the Tennessee Firearms Association.  Using the litmus test of the 2nd Amendment, TFA strives to find and support 2nd Amendment dedicated legislators and to prune those from tree of liberty who have demonstrated that they place no priority on our rights.

Please consider membership in, a renewal of membership, or a supplemental member donation to help the fight for the protection of our rights! Each of us have different capabilities so I am not asking for a specific amount or a specific recurring amount. I am simply asking that you consider that TFA is a grassroots, member supported organization and we are working hard, as volunteers, to pursue this mission.

Please share this request with your friends and family. Encourage them to put on the armor and join in the fight.
