Americans carrying firearms is an increasing trend.

A news report by Channel 5 news in Nashville shows that over 3 million Americans report carry a firearm daily.  The story went on to note, however, that the numbers are trending up at a rapid pace.  The story reports:

Of the roughly 38 million adult handgun owners in the U.S., 3 million have a loaded firearm on them every day, and 9 million say they do at least once a month. That’s according to the first survey to ask gun owners about their carrying habits in more than 20 years.

Now, more states permit carrying a handgun. Nearly 16.5 million people currently hold a concealed-carry permit, a more than 250 percent increase from 2007. Fourteen states also have some form of constitutional carry laws on the books, meaning no permit is required.

A study by the Crime Prevention Research Center (John Lott Jr., Pres.) reports that over 16.3 million Americans have handgun permits.  The story also notes that in 14 states, no permit is required.  The largest increases came during the Obama Administration with a reported 1.83 million net permits and that each of the last 4 years have been record setting years.  The study further notes that “In eleven states, more than 10% of adults have permits. Alabama has the highest rate — 20%. Indiana is second with 15.8%.” – Tennessee is reported at having only 10% of its population holding permits (a signal that the costs and state imposed burdens may be suppressing the number of people carrying with permits in Tennessee?)

Tennessee data available here.  Increased to 597,028 on September 1, 2017, Increased to 595,627 on July 5, 2017, from 594,498 to June 2, 2017.
